Equipping Boards to Lead with Purpose, Strategy, and Stewardship

Strong governance is the cornerstone of a thriving independent school.

Boards of trustees are entrusted with more than fiduciary oversight – they are responsible for ensuring that the school’s mission is fulfilled in a rapidly changing educational landscape.

NBOA Advisory Services offers tailored Governance Trainings to help boards and school leaders work together more effectively, with clarity around roles, responsibilities, and strategic priorities.Whether your board is onboarding new members, navigating a leadership transition, or seeking to sharpen its effectiveness, our training provides the tools and insights needed to govern with confidence and purpose.

Why Governance Training Matters

Independent school boards are composed of accomplished, well-intentioned individuals – yet even the most experienced professionals may find themselves unfamiliar with the unique demands of nonprofit educational governance.

Trustees often receive data without context, attend infrequent finance committee meetings focused on routine approvals, and lack a clear understanding of how their work connects to the school’s long-term strategy.

At many schools, orientation for new trustees is limited, and board agendas are packed with operational updates rather than strategic discussion. The result? Missed opportunities for meaningful engagement, and a board that may be underutilized at a time when its leadership is most needed.

Our Governance Training Helps Boards:

Fully understand the range of their fiduciary and strategic responsibilities

Strengthen the board, head of school, and  business officer partnership

Build a necessary culture of inquiry, trust, and continuous learning

Align practices with the school’s  mission and financial sustainability

Led by Experts in School Leadership and Finance

Governance Trainings are led by Ann V. Klotz, a nationally respected former Head of School with over 40 years of experience in independent education.

Ann brings deep insight into board dynamics, leadership development, and the public purpose of private schools. Her facilitation style is thoughtful, engaging, and grounded in real-world experience.  When appropriate, Ann is joined by an expert CFO from NBOA’s Advisory Services team, ensuring that both governance and financial stewardship are addressed with clarity and depth.

Our work is informed by NBOA’s publication, Effective Financial Governance for Independent School Trustees, a trusted resource that helps boards ask better questions, focus on what matters most, and govern with greater confidence.
